On April 17, the first team rugby boys set off on their annual tour. They spent their first night bonding as a team.
On April 18, they played their first game against the hosts, Krugersdorp High School. Having beaten them last year, they were determined to redeem themselves against DHS.
The DHS boys, however, were having none of it.
They scored a try within the first two minutes of the game. At half-time the score was 21-0 for DHS. The second half was a different affair. KHS came back with a vengeance and the Zorba boys had to defend for most of the second half. They defended bravely and the final score was 21-7 to DHS.
On the second day of tour, the boys spent the day enjoying the Mall of Africa. Although the boys were having fun, they were still determined to prove a point against their next opponents, Petra Schools from Zimbabwe.
After a disastrous start, they were behind 21-0, but the boys had to defend against a much larger school, showing heart and determination.
The day of the game approached and the boys took to the field. What followed was brilliant to watch. The boys put on a display of brilliant running rugby that the school of Zimbabwe could not keep up with. They beat Petra Schools with a score of 42-5.
With their final game of the tour fast approaching, the weather took a turn for the worst.
They were fixtured to play Randburg for their final game but the weather was not promising.
After discussions with the organisers, it was finally decided that the game would take place.
In conditions hardly suitable for rugby, the boys took to the field for their final game determined to upset their opponents as they were the clear favourites to win.
After a disastrous start, they were behind 21-0, but the boys had to defend against a much larger school, showing heart and determination.
The conditions worsened and it was decided that the game would be abandoned with the score on 28-10 to Randburg. The boys learnt a lot from this tour but most importantly came together nicely as a team and they look forward to the rest of the season, determined to prove a point.
DHS congratulates Ayathaba Ngobese, Olwethu Mazibuko and Siphesihle Sikhakhane who were chosen to represent a 7s team in Mauritius this year as well as Jan-Frederik van Zyl who will represent DHS in Dubai this year.
The first team of Dundee High would also like to extend a huge thank you to ALL of their sponsors, WBO Civils, The Trading Post, Quench Water, Mpati Apteek and Docrats.
Without all the support they would not be able to play the game they love so much.
