Riverdale Primary School in Rensburgdrift has just rolled out Estcourt’s biggest recycling project. It all began when the school’s Girl Guides attended the Durban Bay beach clean-up.

Their Guider Mrs Gamede was referred to a social media site and from there; she is now waiting on a container, waste bags, trollies and a truck to arrive.

Thereafter the ‘Litter for Tokens’ project will officially be launched to Estcourt. Just under 100 learners have become involved since April 12.

Once the container arrives, the project will be open to the community to get involved. Here is how it will work, anyone interested in recycling needs to collect a refuse bag full of plastic, boxes and paper.
Once the bag is full, you label it with your name, surname and contact details and drop it off at the school. For each bag, one will receive a token worth R5.

With the tokens, purchases of toys, clothes and even food items can be made at the token shop.
Riverdale Primary School learners were introduced to the project on April 11 and the very next day 76 learners responded. Currently the school has two store rooms packed with recyclable items.

“This project is amazing. We are cleaning our environment, and saving it from things such as plastic pollution, while also improving the quality of life and instilling pride within this rural area,” said Mrs Gamede with excitement.
She would like to request a donation of bin bags, gloves and masks in order for the learners not to contract any illness while collecting recyclable items.

If you can assist or need further information contact Mrs Gamede on 082 719 5136. Keep your eyes peeled for the official launch of Litter for Tokens.
