Spar Hockey Tournament
On Saturday, Sarel Cilliers’ first team hockey girls travelled to St Dominics in Newcastle to participate in the KZN Spar Hockey Challenge.
The first match was against Ferrum High School, who have been the reigning champions for the past seven years. Sarel lost 1-0. Determined not to give up, the Glencoe School won their next game against Pionier 1 – 0. Thereafter, the games became tougher as only the best schools made it to the final rounds.
Sarel showed their “never surrender” attitude and won against Pongola High School, 1 – 0. Sarel took on St Dominics in the semi-finals and drew 0-0. At this stage, nerves were on edge as they had to complete an eight-second penalty shootout to determine which team would go through to the final round. After qualifying for the final round, Sarel took on the undefeated Ferrum High School, who are also the 2019 PUK16 winners. Emotions were running high for both teams, as the Glencoe school faced yet another eight-second penalty shootout which resulted in another draw.
The girls then had to participate in a sudden death round which Sarel unfortunately lost. Congratulations to Ferrum High School on a well-deserved win and to Sarel Cilliers first hockey team for playing so well.

Rugby
On Saturday Sarel Cilliers had another tough day at the office against Vryheid High School, with close scores all round. The u/14’s had yet another close game with Vryheid winning 7/0. The u/15’s made an excellent team effort, coming out victorious 33/24. The u/16 match started off at a frantic pace, with excellent structured rugby.
Unfortunately, the game ended in Vryheid’s favour 24/17. Sarel’s second team carried on with their excellent performances throughout the season and won 19/13 under wet and difficult conditions. The first rugby team played with uncontested scrums failing to give a true reflection of the game. Sarel’s boys had to dig deep to win 19/18 in a close encounter. Well done boys, and everything of the best for next weekend’s fixture against Ferrum High School at Sarel Cilliers.
Chess
Sarel Cilliers played against an unconquered team that have not lost a single match this season.
Unfortunately, two of their team members could not participate in this weekend’s match. Sarel Cilliers drew against Vryheid: 4 games won 4 lost. Well done to T Shavir, Z Buthelezi, N Mdhluli and B Mnyadu.
