‘We have a duty to defend the weak,’ these were the words that were recently uttered by Mondlo Crime Prevention Forum’s Bonginkosi Ntuli after an elderly man was attacked and robbed in his home in Mondlo.

According to Mr Ntuli, the senior citizen lives alone at his home in Ward 18 and is somewhat physically and mentally challenged.
“While walking in the KwaA area last week, I found a crowd of shocked community members standing outside the old man’s house and upon closer inspection, I found that a criminal had gone into his house to rob him,” said a still upset Mr Ntuli.

The old man is said to have tried to fight off the criminal and hide his money bag but to no avail as he was stabbed in the hand during the struggle and the villain managed to flee the scene with all his pension money.
“The biggest struggle has been trying to communicate with the old man in order to find out exactly who he is and all other details. It is very difficult to understand anything he is saying so that has really slowed down the process of giving him the help he needs. I plan to be in touch with the area social worker as the matter needs urgent attention. We need to ensure that we find means to give him a food parcel at least, while we work on finding out his details,” said Mr Ntuli.
The Mondlo CPF is requesting anyone that may have details about or know family members of the old man from Ward 18 in the Ezihlabathini area near the Khumalo home to please come forward as they need.
In closing, Mr Ntuli said that crime is an issue all members of the community need to come together in order to fight and highlighted that it was especially important to protect children, women and the elderly.
