Update: Nomaswazi Shabalala pleads not guilty in murder case of Oscar Hlatshwayo

The state prosecutor contradicted much of Ms Shabalala's statement

Yesterday (Wednesday, May 22), Nomaswazi Shabalala, along with two other suspects, appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court for the murder of the late Simingaye Oscar Hlatshwayo.

Shabalala, a co-worker at the municipality in the same department as the murder victim, gave testimony in the witness box.

During her testimony, she admitted to having an intimate relationship with the deceased, which she claimed ended in 2017. She told the court that by the time she joined the municipality in 2017, the relationship was over. She stressed that she had no motive to kill Mr Hlatshwayo and would not benefit in any way from his death.

On February 7, the day Mr Hlatshwayo was killed, she claimed she was attending a workshop at Dongala and only got to hear about Mr Hlatshwayo’s passing through friends.

She pleaded not guilty.

The state prosecutor, in presenting the State’s case, contradicted much of Ms Shabalala’s statement. The case continues today (May 23).
