Tyres set alight on Dundee/Vryheid Road

SAPS has urged motorists to avoid the area, by detouring through Peacevale and Watt Road to access the Dundee/Vryheid road.

Burning tyres are partially blocking the Dundee/Vryheid road, near the Talana Museum entrance.

Residents began a protest after the Department of Transport allegedly hired temporary workers, from outside of the area, to work on the R33 (Dundee/Greytown road), which is currently being repaired.

A small group of protesters initially gathered at the scene but allowed cars to pass.

SAPS officials arrived at the scene a short while later, which caused most of the protesters to flee.

The police then dragged the burning tyres off the road surface.

Speaker of Endumeni Local Council, Lucky Khumalo, told the Courier a meeting was held between the Department of Transport, aggrieved residents from Craigside/Forestdale and the municipality, in a bid to resolve the issue.

“Hopefully the police can contain the situation tonight. We are meeting tomorrow again and I am certain we can alleviate this situation to the benefit of all,” said Khumalo.
