Matric Spellathon winner plays on national game show

Preparing for the show was not easy, as the contestants were given more eight pages with over 50 words on each page, which they had to memorise, which was a difficult task.

Ingrid Groenewald of Ferrum High School recently took part in the TV show ‘Op die Spel’ on Tuesday night (May 27).

The TV show tests contestants’ spelling proficiency of the Afrikaans language.

“Being on the show was very nerve-wracking,” describes Ingrid of her time on the show.

The game tests you on your knowledge of the Afrikaans language, from spelling to understanding idioms and an overall general knowledge of the language.

“It was a really great experience; the whole production of the show was fascinating, and I even got to see the set of Binnelanders.”

Ingrid performed really well on the show, however, the one term that she had difficulty spelling was ‘verskillende sjokolademousse’e’ (in English – a variety of chocolate mousse).

“I had it all spelled right, but I forgot the last apostrophe on the show.”

Since then, Ingrid has made sure that she can spell those two words. Visit our website, and see her deliver the correct spelling of the two words.

Love for Afrikaans

Ingrid developed her love for the Afrikaans language at a very young age, and as she has always taken a keen interest in her academics, it is no wonder that she is the Deputy Head of Academics at Ferrum High School.

“As a child I was always reliable and responsible when it came to my schoolwork,” she explains.

She was always well placed in the annual Spellathon at school, and national spelling competitions. One of the judges then prompted her to enter the kykNET TV show.

Ingrid encourages others to get more involved in Afrikaans, “Afrikaans is always developing and changing, if you want to get better at the language, you have to sit down and get reading.”

School Life

Ingrid is currently in Grade 12 and has just begun her June exams. Next year she plans to study medicine and become a surgeon. Ingrid isn’t only good at spelling; she also has swimming, hockey and other academic achievements under her belt.

When asked how she balances school and all her other commitments, she jokingly responds “It’s impossible!”
Ingrid is an overachiever with big ambitions, “Finding a balance to do all these things in matric is not easy but it is doable,” she explains.

“Don’t be scared to try new things, you will never know if something is possible, until you actually do it – never be intimidated by other peoples’ opinions.
