Newcastle library to reopen in a month’s time
It’s not clear when the physical work will finish but apparently it’s nearly done.
The doors of the Newcastle Library remain closed to the public.
Despite assurances from the contractor that work would concluded in mid-May, it seems unlikely the facility will serve its purpose until at least the end of June.
Sources said July was a more reasonable estimate.
According to unverified reports, while the Newcastle Library building has not been handed over to Newcastle Municipality, books are being packed and staff are preparing for an influx of readers.
“The cleaning of the exterior, like grass and shrubs, will begin sometime next week. The mechanical people must still calibrate some equipment.”
A response from municipal Head of Communications, Dr Dumisani Thabethe, stated work at Newcastle Library was ‘still in progress’.
He said an updated programme and progress report was awaited from the contractor.
Echoing his previous statement, Dr Thabethe added: “[The] date of opening will be communicated in due course.”
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Councillor, Alex Liu has much to say on the matter.
He commented the library matter was currently in the hands of provincial government, as it had apparently provided funding and appointed the contractor (whether directly or indirectly).
“The IFP will submit a motion to bring this item to Council for discussion, if the contractor is still dragging on,” he concluded.
