Mayor calls briefing as residents protest

Mahlaba said in the few months that he had been at Newcastle’s helm, he has uncovered corruption in the municipality.

In a press briefing held at the mayor’s parlour at the Newcastle Municipality last week (June 6), local and national media gathered to hear what the Mayor of Newcastle, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba had to say, as he tabled a report of alleged corruption within the municipality.

Mahlaba said in the few months that he had been at Newcastle’s helm, he has uncovered corruption in the municipality.

“In the 90 days since I was inaugurated as Mayor of Newcastle, I had stated that I will make sure we fight corruption. We also knew this call will not be well received. Many people have been living off the municipality, and with that said, we discovered a few discrepancies. There were serious corruption offences committed in the municipality.”

Meanwhile, outside the Newcastle Municipality gates, supporters of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) gathered, demanding to be allowed in to the press briefing. Supporters held placards which read different messages: “Away with murderers, justice for Manqasha”, “Junda, usibulalelani?” – translated as ‘Junda, why are you killing us?’ and “Mafika and Arthur, Benzeni?”, translated as ‘What did Mafika and Arthur do?’

In a further development, the ANC in KZN announced that Mahlaba had been put on special leave for 30 days, as of Monday, June 10. For more details on the press briefing, see pages 4 and 5 in this edition.
