Sezameleni’s Youth for Citizens Action Programme (y-cap) identifies learner and teacher issues and works on finding solutions.
Sezameleni Primary School in Lochsloy won last year for their action programme on illiteracy.
After conducting thorough research, the y-cap group looked at ways parents could better help with homework and beat illiteracy. This year, the learners have chosen to focus on water shortage.

Their educator, Mr Leu, said, “Learners have the struggle of being unable to flush toilets and have drinking water due to limited water supplied to the school.”
In light of this, the y-cap team has begun implementing water saving at the school.
On Mandela Day, after securing donations from the community, the team purchased jugs for each class. This will mean that the Jojo tank will not leak any water, as water will be stored in a bucket in each class. And with the use of the jugs, learners can drink water in class, which will also help with teaching time not going to waste as learners no longer have to walk to the tank.
The learners are also looking at inviting uThukela to address the school on water-saving measures.
