Clean-up project to restore the sanctity of the cemetery

Some are using the cemetery and surrounds as a dumping site for rubble

The cemetery has sadly become a place not many want to visit.
This is not because of the sad remembrance of loved ones lost, but instead because of the disgraceful state of the burial grounds.
Some are using the cemetery and surrounds as a dumping site for rubble.
Dennis Jones, from a local car dealership, expressed disgust at the state of the cemetery and took it upon himself to clean up the building waste.
“Almal kla, maar niemand doen iets nie. Ek het ook familielede wat hier begrawe lĂȘ.”
Jones told the Vryheid Herald this was only the first phase of the clean-up he had planned.
The second phase would entail cleaning and repairing the inside of the cemetery, and hopefully planting new sections of grass between the graves.
Jones welcomed and assistance from residents and businesses.
He also encouraged residents to join the Facebook page ”Vryheid clean up’, with the original initiative and inspiration for both the project and page coming from Keith Sparrow.

Residents have dumped rubble outside the cemetery.
