Excitement and uncertainty on first day of school

The Vryheid Herald visited local schools to greet some of the new Grade Ones on their first day of ‘big school’.

The first day of school is synonymous with excitement and some uncertainty.

Today, schools countrywide re-opened for the new 2020 academic year, and were flooded with children starting Grade One.

Teachers were all geared up and ready to teach the next generation about how to read, write and count. Some of the little ones carried their heavy bags by themselves and others had help from a parent.

In their brand new school uniforms, learners were propelled toward their classes, rucksack on their backs and lunch boxes packed and ready.

They expressed eagerness to learn and start the next 12 years of their lives at school. With a final look back and to give a wave to mom and dad, the learners arrived at their classrooms.

When the mothers looked away, one could almost sense hear tears at seeing her ‘baby’ all grown up.
