Finnemore Street residents rally to clean up the Ncandu River

"We have a perfect spot at our doorstep; why not take care of it and enjoy nature?"

The actions of one Finnemore Street resident has prompted a mass clean-up along the banks of the Ncandu River.

Some 60 metres of riverbank in the Paradise area have been cut and cleaned, and now offer a recreational spot for residents to fish at. This is nothing new for Yaseen Rasool, who has been cleaning the riverbanks for over 14 years.

Recently however, some of his friends decided to chip in and help. Mark and Seshne Jacobs of Ressec Security are excited to salvage the river and transform it.

“I got my own private gardener to cut the bamboo that was overgrown around the river area. It was a haven for criminals and illegal dumping,” explained Rasool, who forked out R1 500 with the help of his friends.

Soon, this small team’s efforts were noticed and before long, a community group called ‘Reform Paradise’ was created, which now boasts six other residents on Finnemore Street.

Municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo, is impressed with the efforts of the Finnemore residents.

“We applaud the actions of the citizens in playing a key role in getting rid of grease and grime. At present, we have an aggressive clean-up campaign underway but unfortunately our grass cutters have not gone to that area yet.”
