Fear of the unknown as learners go back to school

The children seemed tense in the midst of a 'new normal'

“Happiness” and “fear” were just two of the many emotions coursing through the Grade 7s at Keate Street Primary when they returned to school on Monday (June 8) after two months of lockdown.

“It will take time for our kids to get used to the ‘new normal’ of wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. However, as teachers, we are there to guide them,’ said school principal Mrs Ndaba.

She added that, “Everything went well on the first day, even though the children seemed tense. There was definitely fear of the unknown.”

By the end of last week, the fear was all but gone and a bunch of smiling children (albeit with smiles hidden behind their face masks) were back in the ‘school groove’ and ready to tackle all the challenges thrown at them.
