DUNDEE: DHS’s Nompilo Mahaye finishes 10th in South Africa

Passion radiated from her as she convinced her listeners with her eloquent speech.

Earlier this year, Nompilo Mahaye went through to the final round in the South African Literacy Association (SALA) public speaking competition.

This is an annual competition that was created in order to promote public speaking and help build learner confidence. SALA believes that any form of persuasive or public speaking is an art and should be refined.

This is exactly what Nompilo has done, impressing the judges so much that she ended 10th overall in the Grade 12 English Home Language category, even though she is only a Grade 11 learner this year.

She speaks with a natural confidence, and effortlessly persuades with her passionate words. SALA was founded in 2012 and participation increased every year, truly making it a large national competition. In order to keep the competition alive this year, learners had to upload their speeches online and it was a challenge, as this was a completely new experience.

Nompilo did a lot of research and worked on the topic ‘South Africa Should Emancipate’. The crux of her argument centred on South Africa freeing itself from the shackles of poverty and broadening its scope to emancipate Africa as a continent. Passion radiated from her as she convinced her listeners with her eloquent speech.

With a little guidance from Mrs Sewmangal, she was able to fine-tune her speech and finish in an impressive 10th position. DHS is extremely proud of this young lady who not only impressed with her speech, but blew people away with her insight and maturity regarding the future of our beautiful country.
