ESTCOURT KZN: Focus on food security with organic farming

Some of the attendees had already had experience with conventional gardening, but were new to the organic methods

On December 9, the Al-Imdaad Foundation hosted a delegation of 15 individuals who had been selected to benefit from a ‘One Home, One Garden’ training and induction programme in partnership with the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier and the Department of Agriculture.

The purpose of the programme was to introduce the identified beneficiaries to basic organic farming techniques.
The 15 individuals had been selected by the Department of Agriculture from Inkosi Langalibalele, Alfred Duma and Okhahlamba local municipalities.

The visiting beneficiaries received a day’s training in the organic- and permaculture-based growing techniques used at the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s community garden.

Mrs Mkhize from the Office of the Premier spoke about the potential for greater involvement, saying, “This programme does not end today. We need to engage the Department of Economic Development, Radical Agrarian Socio-Economic Transformation, businesses and other relevant stakeholders to come forward and present to the identified beneficiaries how they can give support with regards to providing the market.”

Speaking about the overall aim of the programme, Al-Imdaad Foundation garden co-ordinator Mubeen Peer said, “This food security programme is aimed at identifying and graduating the beneficiaries out of poverty.”
