Sod-turning heralds construction of brand new sports complex in Msinga
It was said at the ceremony that 25 local people have been hired by the contractor for the duration of the construction phase.
Construction has started on a multifunctional sports field in the Msinga rural area, following a sod-turning ceremony overseen by the Msinga mayor, Cllr Felinkosi Sikhakhane.
It was Bongumusa Mkhize (currently chairman of the Ilenge Football Association) who started this sports field initiative back in 2012.
Msinga Local Municipality received the request, but due to financial limitations, the project was unable to proceed.
However, Mkhize persevered with the annual Ilenge Football Tournament, making for a compelling argument for the municipality to take the proposal into account.
The tournament now attracts clubs from both the Umzinyathi and uThukela regions.
“Additionally, the association created a soccer league with 12 teams and a club development (under 15) league with eight teams.
Many young boys will find optimism in having this sports field, and it will open doors for discovering talented individuals within the neighbourhood.
“Our democracy is given new life by this development,” said Mkhize.
He added that the sports field will have the following amenities: a guard house, a main soccer field with lines, a practice field, rest rooms, a kitchen, an office, a combination court (netball, volleyball, tennis and basketball), a grandstand for 300 spectators, a borehole and a septic tank.
“We appreciate everything the municipality has done and we have been motivated to do more for our neighbourhood,” he concluded.
