Newcastle’s Jo Claassen reflects on completing the beautiful but challenging Kaapsehoop Marathon
Newcastle's running fanatic, Jo Claassen, was ecstatic to have crossed the finish line at the acclaimed Kaapsehoop Marathon held earlier this month in Mbombela.
It was an achievement that left Jo feeling triumphant despite the stiff challenge the marathon presents to athletes.
The Newcastle Advertiser asked Jo to share her insights into the experience, preparation, and future running plans:
NA: How did you feel when you crossed the finish line?
Jo: Crossing the finish line felt amazing! Even though I didn’t finish first, I still feel like a winner.
NA: What was your strategy for this marathon?
Jo: I aimed to start at a moderate pace to avoid burning out before the halfway point. But, to be honest, I did the opposite; I started too fast and ended up with a side stitch!
NA: Did you face any particular challenges during the race?
Jo: Yes, the side stitch from starting too fast made it tough, but I pushed through.
NA: What was your favourite part of the course?
Jo: My favourite part was definitely the down hills. They may hurt afterward, but they’re fun in the moment!
NA: How did you prepare in the weeks leading up to the marathon?
Jo: I trained as hard as my body allowed, but I made sure to rest a day or two before the race. Training helps but there’s always something unexpected on race day.
NA: What motivated you to participate in this marathon?
Jo: I love the Kaapsehoop Marathon. It’s a stunning race, and this year marked my sixth time running it. I’ll definitely be back again.
NA: How do you stay mentally focused during a long race?
Jo: I keep my mind on the finish line and think of my husband, my biggest supporter, who motivates me from the sidelines.
NA: Have you run any other marathons? How does this one compare?
Jo: I’ve done many marathons, and Kaapsehoop is no easy feat! It’s a beautiful marathon, though, almost as stunning as the Two Oceans.
