Endumeni Municipality grapples with vandalism and theft of infrastructure

Copper has long been sought after by thieves but now the rush for scrap has degenerated into a 'free for all'.

Copper thieves have targeted schools, businesses, churches, and private homes, ripping out piping sometimes during the day and even while homeowners are at home.
The broader economic toll of infrastructure vandalism is staggering, with losses estimated at around R187 billion annually across South Africa.
Unfortunately, municipalities like Endumeni are ill-equipped to replace the stolen and damaged infrastructure, leading to a constant decline cycle.

The Tatham Street Bridge has also been in the cross-hairs of thieves who, over the past two years, have gradually dismantled the hand railing (which has presumably been sold for scrap).

The route is a busy pedestrian walkway used by Majuba College students and Dundee High School learners.
The lack of a railing has exposed pedestrians to a steep drop to the railway line.

There are fears that criminals will take advantage of this and target students and learners – some of whom have reported being mugged and robbed of their cellphones in that area.

At a recent public meeting discussing the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP), Mayor Mcebo Mkhize reiterated his commitment to addressing basic infrastructure issues, including repairing streetlights, fixing potholes and improving the storm-water drainage system.

However, the Endumeni Residents Association (ERA) has expressed concern that more needs to be done to protect and repair municipal infrastructure.
The association also pointed out the long-awaited installation of a CCTV system in the central town area, a project that has yet to materialise, despite repeated promises.
