Cancer survivors share and care

The meetings provide a safe place to learn and share

A successful year-end cancer support group meeting was held on December 4. 15 survivors and volunteers made their way to the St Matthew’s Church hall at 14:00 to share, learn and relax. The meeting was hosted by community volunteer Ramika Peerbhay.

Two newly-diagnosed members were part of the meeting and said they were impressed with the support group, especially after learning that most members are survivors of more than 14 years. This, they said, gave them hope.

“A few older survivors are grateful for these meetings too, as they have learnt from each other and it has made them comfortable dealing with the disease. I mentioned that their faith, prayers and most of all, family support is essential for a survivor and survival. Keep calm and fight strong; you are not alone,” said Peerbhay.

After a prayer, a group discussion was held, where survivors shared their healing process. A lucky draw was held and an inspirational song played. Thereafter, everyone was treated to snacks that were sponsored by volunteers.

“The members are now looking forward to support group meetings early next year. I would like to thank all the survivors, volunteers, sponsors and the Anglican Church for the use of their hall,” Peerbhay said.

The survivors were also grateful to Peerbhay for keeping them in her thoughts; delivering informative talks on health; and making them feel special. Each person received a gift before leaving the meeting.
