Councillor helps elderly woman apply for ID
Mrs Gumede is happy that she will finally be able to get an old age grant
A woman from Ward 21, Weenen, will soon have an ID card thanks to Ward 20 Councillor Lucky Mlele, who took her to Estcourt Home Affairs to apply for one.
Mrs Gumede lives alone in a mud house that is not in good condition. To make matters worse, because she has no ID, she doesn’t qualify for an old age grant.
Gumede said she was previously visited by political leaders who promised they would build her a decent house and would provide her with groceries every month while awaiting an ID. However, this did not happen.

On Tuesday, December 10, Cllr Mlele took the initiative and drove the elderly woman to Estcourt Home Affairs for an ID application. “Her bad situation was published online by a local newspaper and went viral on social media. Her story really touched me and I said to myself, ‘Let me try my luck to help her get an ID so at least she can get a grant’. We managed to apply successfully and we are now waiting for the ID to be issued,” said Mlele.
Gumede told the Estcourt News she is happy that she will finally get an old age grant to help take care of herself. Up until now, she has been depending on her neighbours for assistance.
