Young women at Mthashana College push for soccer opportunities

Mthashana College girls form soccer team but need opportunities to compete and grow.

Young girls from Mthashana College have shown interest in playing soccer. These girls believe that someday they can make a career out of football, but various challenges often make them lose hope along the way.
Philile Zondi, who is a Management Assistance student, said the college does not offer football for females “We created a team for the college earlier this year, working alongside our coach, Siyanqoba Sibiya, as there were a number of girls who showed interest in playing soccer rather than netball or volleyball. The team is new and everyone is keen on playing, but there are challenges that need to be overcome. Such as: Time management as a team; our discipline still needs to be worked on; and most importantly, opportunities. We need to play in order for us to get fit and build a competitive team, but we hardly compete and that makes us lose interest. If we could play with other ladies from other teams in Vryheid and not necessarily at the college, I believe we would have many more opportunities. Our cry is to get help and find other ladies’ soccer teams to compete against, as many of us would like to compete in the province and nationally.”
Anyone or any team that can give them opportunities to play and compete can call 073 677 8738.
