We all love summer, but if we are covered in fur, it can get very hot!
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) would like to remind pet owners to keep their dogs and cats well hydrated during the hot summer days. Pets need access to clean drinking water, preferably under shelter where it won’t evaporate while you are at work for the day. Pets also have to have shelter from the scorching sun or they could become sick. Do not chain your dog in a place where he will overheat. If you are found to be neglecting these basic needs, you will be fined and your pet will be removed.
The AACL will have a stall at the Night Market on Friday night in Queen Street. There will be a great selection of secondhand books, as well as ‘treats for doggy and owner’ in the form of delicious muffins for you and hoofs filled with peanut butter and dog biscuits for your best friend.
They will be putting up a Christmas tree in remembrance of domestic pets that have passed away. Cards will be hanging on the tree, each bearing a picture and name of a pet that has died. The cards will be sold for R10, so please support a good cause. The money raised from the sale of these cards will help the kennels take care of animals that are still alive.
A raffle is currently on the go and the first prize is a weekend for two in the Nelson Mandela Presidential Suite at the Fern Hill Hotel and Conference Centre, including bed and breakfast. Tickets are only R20. This is also for a very worthy cause, as all the money raised will go to the AACL. Tickets are available from the league and Gazette offices.
All the proceeds will be going towards the maintenance of the kennels, so please support this worthy cause.
Please remember to book your pets into the kennels if you are going away on holiday during the festive season and need someone to look after them. There is very limited space left. You have to bring proof of vaccinations when doing your booking. No animal will be accepted without proof of receiving the necessary vaccinations.
There are lots of puppies at the kennels at the moment and they would love to have a good home. Please visit the AACL to pick up your new best friend!
Thank you to Pierre Massyn and TFS for their kind donations.
