We all live in a community or system, where the people around us play a part in determining our success and happiness in different ways. These connections can also be important in so far as work and career are concerned.
Social events and work functions are a good opportunity to secure and strengthen these kinds of connections. It is therefore important that you think about your strategy and behaviour at these events. Prepare for the event by thinking about people who you might like to meet or talk to at the event.
Get the event off to a good start by arriving on time and appearing organised. Arriving early will also allow you to meet many of the guests as they arrive for the event. Make sure that you are organised for the event by having enough business cards.
Keep your business cards in one pocket, and keep a second pocket for receiving business cards. Identify important groups at the event, and then identify a person who you know in the group or make eye contact with someone and find an opportunity to join the group.
Enter the group with a clear introduction and firm handshake. Start conversation by asking open-ended questions, which allow people to speak about themselves.
More than anything, remember to smile and appear approachable.
