It is clear that life is full of difficult moments.
Although these moments are real and need attention, we sometimes pay them more attention than the good things that happen almost every day. Sometimes we need to take the effort to acknowledge the good things – big and small – that happen every day.
Try and incorporate this process into small rituals you do every day. Take the time at the dinner table to give thanks for the good things that happened in any given day, either through prayer or getting each family member to take a turn to reflect on the best part of their day.
Saying thank you for the small things your family do for you is also a good way to get into the habit of noticing (and teaching your family how to notice) the good things that happen around us all the time. A friend of mine keeps a reflection jar, where she stores notes that she keeps about good things people say and do for her every day.
Going through these notes from time to time is a wonderful reminder and reassurance that the world and our lives are full of many wonderful moments and things, big and small.
