‘Luister hier boetman, ons gaan nou braai!’

On Heritage Day millions of South Africans fired up their braais, marinated up a storm and did what we do best: Braai.

Synonymous with South African culture, a good braai is always a winner. However, as a resident with ancestors from Britain and who knows where else, Five Cent Piece realised real heritage was missing from the celebration.

Many cultures have ancient and interesting customs and stories. Being of a somewhat mixed decent, Five Cent Piece was feeling a little left out from the festivities.

But it isn’t the end of the world. Where there is a will, there is a way. Finding something to keep as a tradition and include in the heritage of a South African, born and bred, can’t be too hard?

When one takes stock, there are so many things we take for granted that only a South African would do. The way we describe things, the way we drive, the way we complain and most certainly the way we eat.

Instead of feeling left out, we should be proud to be part of such a diverse culture with so much heritage we can pick and choose what we want to celebrate.

Five Cent Piece for one, is going to sit quietly by the fire, enjoying the star-filled sky. And then five minutes later, run to get the washing off the line as the rain falls as if from nowhere.

If nothing, you have to love this country.
