What causes ageing?
Your skin contains skin cells that manufacture substances called collagen and elastin. These substances form fibres in your skin. Collagen and elastin work together to provide support to the skin. Without them, your skin would simply collapse.

As we get older, these fibres become weaker causing the skin to sag and to start showing signs of wrinkling and lines. Poor circulation and lymph drainage result in a loss of structural integrity, weakened fragile capillaries, decreased skin density and a decline in collagen production.

With the decline in enzymatic activity, cell division slows down and solar keratosis and impact of the environment become evident. Ageing is the result of a decline in skin function.

Premature ageing and sun damage
Premature ageing is characterised by symptoms such as pigmentation, sun spots, fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.

It is also the loss of structural integrity within the skin. As we age, the skin’s matrix becomes thin and the skin loses its bounce.

Constant exposure to the sun speeds up the ageing process by disrupting the normal architecture of connective tissue within the dermis. The sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays actually decreases collagen and elastin, which causes the skin to lose its firmness.
