My view

Most roads have outlived their life-span and have to be replaced with a completely new surface

* For your information, the budget for Security at Alfred Duma Local Municipality for the 2017/2018 financial year was R30 million. Nearly half that amount has already been utilised.

* Why is it necessary to provide bodyguards for candidates who were democratically voted into office by the majority of voters?

* A quarter of a century into our democracy and we still cannot find wood in a forest. Political parties are stirring the pot of gravy. Those that stir rubbish forget they have to lick the ladle. Brace yourselves for handing over of houses, poses with babies, official openings of bridges, footpaths, even shopping centres, promises, promises and more promises.

* In December, most of our children came home with reports from their schools. Some excelled, some were mediocre and a few failed. What report card will you give to your councillor? Did he / she live up to party promises? Did he / she maintain contact with you or your neighbourhood? How often did he / she do a walkabout in your area / ward? Is he / she an asset to his / her party? By voting for the party, will the quality of your life improve?

* In some streets, potholes are being filled. These stop-gap measures will not solve the problem of regular road maintenance. Most roads have outlived their life-span and have to be replaced with a completely new surface, but for all that, council needs money and money is what council does not have, except for other lesser important items / services.
