Just Sayin’ – Job seeking is not for the feint-hearted

Timing is everything and you only get to understand this cliche after going through trying times and obstacles

It is graduation season once again and many have rejoiced and looked forward to this day since primary school.
Graduation day brings so many mixed emotions. I remember my graduation day; I was so overwhelmed and ecstatic at the same time.

The thought of seeing myself in the academic dress (the black gown) bought so many tears and memories of all the things I had gone through with my family in order to put me through school. The long awaited day came and I was beside myself and in utter shock that I was a step closer to reaching my dreams.
Graduation day went well.

I took my grandmother with me and our neighbours ululated throughout the morning. The ceremony went well, but as soon as I got back home I was reminded that I was no longer a student but part of our country’s sad reality of being an unemployed graduate.
As months go by after graduation so does being demotivated. We all grow up thinking that graduating means a guaranteed job, but that is far from reality.

Job seeking is not for the feint-hearted. It requires a lot of mental stamina (thinking positively at all times). It also requires money as printing CVs and going to job interviews (if you are lucky) doesn’t come cheap.
Some may laugh at you and talk behind your back.

I remember the same neighbours who were so excited on my graduation day, were the same people who used to gossip about me when I finally found a job as a call centre agent. “She thought she was better than us,” they would say.

Well, I worked hard and thought I may have not loved my job (debt collection is no child’s play) but I was happy that it paid my bills at the time.

Timing is everything and you only get to understand this cliche after going through trying times and obstacles. As a Christian woman, I believe that when your time comes; be it for a job, buying a car or a house, nothing will stand in your way, not even voodoo.

In the meantime, unemployed graduates don’t give in, push harder every day and if you don’t get a job in your field of study, be patient your time will come. One more thing don’t get envious when your former classmates get jobs before you do.

Just remember that God saves the best for last. Your light won’t shine any less by congratulating those who are being employed after graduation. Wait, your day will come.
