How goes it, people of Ladysmith? I’m sorry I didn’t write to you guys last week. I was bit preoccupied. I didn’t even make it to the Berg Show, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t want to. But firstly, it’s been a crazy few weeks.
I am sure most of you have seen that a lot of foreigners are being attacked in South Africa. They are being accused of committing crimes and taking jobs from locals. I’m just wondering about one thing. In countries like Australia and the UK, with a large South African diaspora: Do you think the citizens of those countries will ever revolt due to the fact that we take their jobs?
I don’t think it’s impossible. As a man, I’m appalled by all the violence against women and children. Nothing seems to stop these horrific occurrences. Despite laws, protocols and prison sentences, it doesn’t stop. What do you think of bringing in the death penalty? I was so shocked when I heard that Chester Williams had passed away. He was a former Springbok wing (part of the 1995 winning squad).
First James Small, now him. Rest in peace, Chester! As I said before, I was really looking forward to going to the Berg Show: Seeing Locnville and all the other artists performing, meeting friends, riding around the show grounds with my wheelchair and doing some shopping on my own.
My cowboy hat was ready, hanging on the hook. Then fate intervened. I got sick. But I didn’t have the usual flu / pneumonia symptoms. On Thursday, my breathing was laboured and I was rushed to La Verna Hospital. I was admitted by the medical personnel and after they did some blood tests, it was confirmed that I had contracted an unknown bacterial virus. Who knows where I picked it up! For five days, I had to get a load of antibiotics to fight it.
I am very thankful to Dr Kotze and the nursing staff of the high care unit for taking such excellent care of me. Special mention must be made of staff nurse Nokuthula Macu. She was my Florence Nightingale.
If there is one thing I notice, though, it’s that people in my community rather go to Pietermaritzburg or Bethlehem for medical reasons. To them, I would like to say: I am more than happy with the care and treatment I received at La Verna Hospital. Even the food was good. Leave your negative perceptions and give them a chance.
Have a great day! Bye-bye.
