Newcastle Legends continues its rise to the top of the log against Estcourt

Last Saturday, Legends travelled to Estcourt to challenge a team six places above it on the log, and this was a true pivotal match.

Estcourt’s Old Crocks were no match for Newcastle Legends this weekend.

Last Saturday, Legends travelled to Estcourt to challenge a team six places above it on the log, and this was a true pivotal match.

A win for Estcourt would have seen it to third place.

Likewise, a win for Legends would move the local team up to eighth position out of 18 teams in total in the league.

In the words of players, Legends began like a house on fire.

Although numerous opportunities were squandered in the opening 10 minutes, Estcourt simply could not get into the game.

Legends opened the score tally in the 15th minute.

“Legends took the lead with a great run from their fullback, who ran almost the length of the pitch to lay off a sweet pass for the striker, to slot the ball into the net.”

10 minutes later, Legends extended its lead.

Estcourt seemed stunned and resorted to more physical play, but was unable to avert a third goal by Legends just before the half time break.

After the break however, Estcourt found its footing.

The team managed to sneak a goal in after Legends were caught offside, and team managers, Imtiaaz Khan and Dennis Gounden opted for a change of player.

“They decided to beef up the Legends’ midfield, opting to play with one striker instead of two.”

Premie Singh then came onto the field for Legends, and with his subtle control of the match, put on a Man of the Match display.

Meanwhile, Estcourt continued its attempts to equalise.

However, Legends caught its opponents on the counter, with Moulana Sulaiman playing a cross field pass to Mohamed Abdul, who dribbled past two defenders.

He then found Stanley East, whose powerful shot struck the crossbar.

Jesse Dipa gained control of the ball off the rebound, and sunk the fourth goal for Legends and sealed the deal with Estcourt.

“[Imtiaaz and Dennis] were ecstatic with a win away from home. Premie was impressed with the team’s unified performance and character display.”

Roy Harry – who could not play due to an injury sustained at training – warned his team not to grow overconfident however, as it had a tough double header at the weekend.

On Saturday, the team travels back to the Durban area.

Legends takes on Verulam Legends and Phoenix Masters in what are sure to be two tough contests, critical to the locals advancing up the log.

“Newcastle Legends thanks all the supporters who travelled to Estcourt, and the generous sponsors.”
