WATCH: Coach offers insights on strength training for running

Alcohol consumption is detrimental to sports performance because of how it affects the body during exercise.

Running coach, Sandile Mthembu (36) is no stranger to endurance and looking back on his past marathon experiences, he offers athletes advice on how to maintain fitness during the country’s lockdown.

Co-founder of the local Harambe 2040 Athletic Club, Mthembu provides insight into the ‘art of running’ through a weekly column he posts on the running club’s Facebook page, best known as ‘Coach’s Corner’.

Through his research, Mthembu has discovered that running has some well needed benefits to those who may contract Covid-19.

“Exercise can assist those who develop respiratory problems and participating in high endurance exercises like running, a person is far more likely to survive and heal the respiratory system.”

Mthembu believes that alcohol consumption can also have a negative impact on the body, whether a person is a social runner or an experienced runner.

“Alcohol is detrimental to sports performance because of how it affects the body during exercise and too much of it can lead to dehydration,” he warned.
