A night of charitable racing

The sound of roaring engines filled the night air last Saturday evening at the Oval Track’s monthly race meet.

Despite the chilly weather, racing enthusiasts gathered round the track, eager to cheer on their favourite racers.

While the racing event enthralled spectators, the event was different from previous meetings.

A portion of the night’s proceeds went to Privarshan Pillay, an 11-year-old suffering from lupus.

As Privarshan needs constant medical treatment, the Oval Track team dedicated the night to assist his parents in ensuring he received relevant treatment and medication.

In the Tin Top division, Boet Buys sped into first place, with Imraan Ameer clinching second position and William Hand in third place.

Gideon Hand took the win in the Hot Rods category, followed by William Hand and Francois Greyvenstein in second and third place, respectively.

In the Two-Litre division, Gert Geringer raced into first place, with Gideon Hand in secon position and Pieter Bester in third place.

Ali Jamalodeen secured the win for the 1600 category, with Dullah Jamalodeen in second place and Cathleen de Jager in third place.

The Ladies division’s victory went to Zaakira Khan, with Wilma Lindeque in second place and Shandeera Govender in third position.

Shaukat Khan took first place in the 1660 division, followed by Imraan Ameer in second and Mynhardt Myburgh in third.

The next Oval track racing event will be taking place on June 4, and with the Newcastle Oval Raceway grounds playing host to the first leg of the South African Regional Championships.

On the day, four clubs from neighbouring regions will be participating.

The event is set to start at 3pm, with the gates opening at 8am.

Entrance fee for the day will be R50 for adults, R30 for children under 12.

Food stalls will be available and the community is encouraged to bring their braai stands and cooler boxes.

For more information, contact Boet Buys on 083 467 6660 or Johann de Jager on 084 300 0971.
