Local karateka outclass the competition

“Hard work and dedication does pay off. We would like to congratulate all karateka, sensei and parents on their wonderful achievements.”

The Natal JKA Provincial Championships were held in Pinetown on April 30.

From the entire province, there were more than 500 entries, including a squad of 66 sent by the Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA branch. Locals brought home a staggering 59 gold, 33 silver and 24 bronze medals.

“What makes this achievement so much more outstanding is that all the squad members (top four) have qualified to represent KZN at the South African Championships,” explained Sensei Johan Swart.

This competition takes place next week in Johannesburg. As part of the reward for good behaviour and excellent results, the NKZN JKA team stopped at the African Bird of Prey Sanctuary in Pietermaritzburg, where they got to see vultures and secretary birds up close.

They were informed of the situation these raptors find themselves in, because of ignorance and cruelty. Karateka were also treated to flying displays and learned the hunting habits of eagles, owls, kites and buzzards.

“Hard work and dedication does pay off. We would like to congratulate all karateka, sensei and parents on their wonderful achievements.”
