Amajuba United is repairing its bridge to success.

In an ABC Motsepe League Second Division encounter at oSizweni Stadium, the team clinched a 3-1 vital win over Durbanites, Matimatolo Stars.

This was redemption at the end of a season where United blew hot and cold.

In the must-win encounter, the oSizweni-based United showed it meant business with pressure from the get-go, challenging shaky defence from Stars.

However, the early part of the match saw numerous scoring chances poorly used.

When United eventually broke the ice, it was through the boot of reliable striker, Vusumuzi ‘Poker’ Mahlambi, who netted in the 29th minute.

Despite fierce attacking, the match remained 1-0 at half-time.

“The home side’s players must have been given a pep talk by the coach during the break,” explained Sibusiso Mdlalose. “The team returned revitalised in the second half.”

Veteran striker, Senzosenkosi ‘Steringi’ Thwala made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half, finishing a pinpoint accurate pass from Thembinkosi ‘Nko’ Buthelezi.

Then, Ayanda ‘Zahara’ Nkosi increased the goal tally with a free kick from outside the box.

Even though the lead was healthy, Stars regrouped and fought back against the home side, although it was let down by poor finishing.

In the 67th minute, however, Stars sunk a consolation goal via Sanele Khanyile.

United coach, Nathi Gule didn’t mince his words on the importance of his side’s victory, especially since it has not performed well this season.

“This was an important victory for us – we haven’t been consistent this season. There has been some improvement in recent league matches, but there is room for more.

Hopefully we will come back a better side next season, as I intend on reinforcing the team with more quality players,” said Mr Gule, who took up the reins mid-season.

United is currently the only soccer team in the Amajuba district competing in the Motsepe League’s Second Division, and finds itself 11th of 17 teams.
