A new band has been making waves on the post-hardcore rock scene this year with their positive lyrics and hard-hitting anthems. Michigan’s I Prevail has truly prevailed with their brand new album, Lifelines that showcases the perfect balance between raging beats and breakdowns and melodic vocals and rhythms.
The band currently consists of Brian Burkheiser – clean vocals, Eric Vanlerberghe – unclean vocals, Steve Menoian – lead guitar, Lee Runestad – drums, Dylan Bowman – rhythm guitar, backing vocals and Tony Camposeo – bass guitar.
5. My Heart I Surrender
We start the countdown with one of I Prevail’s softer acoustic songs.
This is the ultimate love ballad that focuses on relationships, feeling and why or why not two people can spend their lives together.
The lyrics are brilliantly composed in conjunction with the delivery of the vocals over the acoustic guitars.
The opening line, ‘I’m a ghost in your eyes’ showcases the problematic nature of showing love or falling in love with someone who does not have the same feelings. ‘Will our stars ever align?
Will two hearts beat in time?
These words you should always remember.
To you, my heart I surrender,’ are some of the best lyrics.
4. Stuck in Your Head
Catchy is one way to describe this song that, just as its title says, will really stick in your head.
The chorus is absolutely golden with Burkheiser giving it his all behind the microphone. Menoian’s lead guitar work also deserves compliments. The lyrics are really cleverly written and focus on the theme of a broken relationship and tying it in with metaphors of a broken record on a turntable.
The lyrics, ‘For the record, you are the broken one, tried to sing along but we got stuck, so we turn it over and over again.’
The music video also features the band playing inside someone’s head, which is a clever way of illustrating the meaning of the song visually.
3. Worst Part of Me
‘You pulled me in with a warm embrace. To drag me down to the darkest place. I want to feel just like myself again.
But with these chains around my ankles, I can’t get away.’
These are the lyrics from this song that summarise leaving toxic friendships and relationships behind.
The emotion in Burkheiser’s voice is one of the reasons why this song is one of their best.
The chorus, ‘If we’re being honest, you broke every little promise that you made to me, I was too blind to see. I was so defenseless now I’m coming to my senses.
After all these years, it’s finally crystal clear’ is also one of the highlights of this song that features pummeling drum work and crunching guitars mixed with harmonic slower guitar parts.
2. Scars
‘In the heat of the moment, when fear has you frozen you’re crashing and burning, when life’s at its coldest.
Don’t fall too far from who you are.
They can cut us but we’ll wear our scars.’ This song focuses on the everyday struggle of people in society.
Everyone has the same problems and scars and we need to stand together in spite of our difficulties.
A great track when wanting to overcome the obstacles and rising above challenges. The theme of identity is also prevalent with the lyrics, ‘Don’t fall too far from who you are.’ Two thumbs up for this hit single.
1. Come and Get it
This is the number one for a number of reasons. Firstly, the song has one of the hardest-hitting guitar and drums parts before Vanlerberghe delivers one of his loudest, and most aggressive, vocals. His vocal partnership with Burkheiser is perfectly portrayed in this song, with the latter delivering in the chorus with ‘Look at you now, another face in the crowd. I am, I am the headline,’ which focuses on overcoming struggles and proving a point to the naysayers. This song also has one of the rowdiest breakdowns in the business.
Pure class from start to finish.
