On My Playlist: Top 5 Thrice Songs

Thrice has been a big, staple influence on modern post-hardcore bands with their unique style and interesting time signatures in their music. Thrice has been a big, staple influence on modern post-hardcore bands with their unique style and interesting time signatures in their music. The band still continues to make music that is relevant and unique. The band was formed in 1998 when lead vocalist, Dustin Kensrue and guitarist, Tappei Teranishi were still in high school. Eddie Breckenridge (bass) and Riley Breckenridge (drums) complete the lineup.
Honourable mentions: ‘Silhouette’, ‘Of Dust and Nations’, ‘Deadbolt’ and ‘Between the End and Where We Lie’.
5. To Awake and Avenge the Dead
This is a classic Thrice song from their 2002 album The Illusion of Safety that showcases their raw energy and brutal musical nature to the fore. The intro guitar riff from Teranishi is fast-paced and exciting as Breckenridge’s snare beat fills the empty space perfectly. The guitar riff after the first verse is also absolutely unique and mesmerising and is amplified by Kensrue’s screams that add to the ferocity of the song. The bridge and outro with the guitar breakdown are also one of my favourite parts of the song that goes at full tilt from beginning to end.

4. Blinded
This song from their 2011 album Major/Minor is definitely one of their best, mainly because of the excellent lyrical content and song progression that are both melodic and rhythmic in the same breath. The lyrics, ‘I was always one of the blameless. Or at least that’s what I believed. I never thought I could have been blinded. Until I could no longer see.’
One of the most recognisable elements of the song is the intro guitar riff with its grunge sound that builds the foundation for the entire song.
Breckenridge’s off-beat drumming also adds extra character to the song.

3. The Artist in the Ambulance
‘Late night, brakes lock, hear the tyres squeal. Red light, can’t stop so I spin the wheel. My world goes black before I feel an angel lift me up. And I open bloodshot eyes into fluorescent white.’
This is how this amazing song opens as Kensrue sings these passionate words with only a palm-muted electric guitar in the background.
The song then moves into motion and flows perfectly from verse to chorus and chorus to bridge. This is a very heart-warming and emotional song about second chances and the lack thereof and how people often find salvation in harrowing circumstances such as in an ambulance after a car crash.

2. Image of the Invisible

This is Thrice at their absolute best and the strong delivery of the vocals where Kensrue screams ‘We are the image of the invisible’ is a true highlight.
The message behind the song is living for what you believe in, no matter what the world may want you to be. The snare drumming on this track is also brilliantly executed and gets the song into a marching rhythm that is both powerful and inspiring. ‘We all were lost now we are found. No one can stop us or slow us down. We are the named and we are known. We know that we’ll never walk alone.’

1.Stare At the Sun
This is still one of Thrice’s best songs and even though it was released in 2003, it still stands the test of time. ‘Do I trust my heart or just my mind? Why is truth so hard to find in this world?’ The lyrics are once again fantastically written in combination with the rhythm and musical aspects of the song. The chorus is also brilliantly written and sticks in your head with the beautiful lyrics painting a picture of hope and the need for miracles in our lives: ‘Due for a miracle. I’m waiting for a sign. I’ll stare straight into the sun. And I won’t close my eyes.’
