Storm water ingress causes sewer overflow

This practice not only strains the system efficiency but causes a potential health hazard due to sewer spillages.

JB Marks Local Municipality has notified residents that due to high volumes of storm water entering the main sewage lines, a bottle neck effect is causing severe sewage overspill in certain areas.

Jeanette Tshite, municipal spokesperson, says that lower lying areas are the most affected.

“The system is unable to cope with the increased volume. As a result, sewer overflows are occurring, affecting houses located at the lowest points of the sewer line.”

Investigation reveals that significant amount of storm water ingress is due to illegal connections directing roof rainwater into the sewer system. This is strictly prohibited.

This practice not only strains the system efficiency but causes a potential health hazard due to sewer spillages.

The municipality urges all residents to immediately disconnect any unauthorized storm water connections.
