Family claims security blocked visit to critically ill relative
He alleges that not only were they turned away, but one of the security guards also pushed a member of the group during the confrontation.
A family from Stilfontein has accused Potchefstroom Hospital security guards of denying them access to a critically ill relative despite his serious heart condition and allegedly pushing one of the visitors during the incident.
According to Dawie Neff, the brother of the patient, the family arrived at the hospital between 09:30 and 10:00 on June 24, accompanied by a pastor, to pray with their brother, who he says has a life-threatening condition.
The group was reportedly stopped by two security guards, who informed them that visiting hours were over and they would not be allowed to enter. Neff said the family had travelled from Stilfontein to Potchefstroom, hoping to see and support their brother during what they believed could be his final moments.
He alleges that not only were they turned away, but one of the security guards also pushed a member of the group during the confrontation. The incident is believed to have taken place near Ward 2 on the second floor of the hospital.
While visiting hours are enforced for various reasons, many public hospitals do make special allowances for visits in emergency or end-of life-situations. Neff expressed disappointment in how the situation was handled, saying their request was not heard and that the guards showed no empathy.
Efforts to get a comment from the hospital have been unsuccessful. By the time of publication, the hospital had not responded to the Herald’s enquiries.
