In loving memory of Johannes Hendricus Scheepers

In his youth, Johann was an avid cyclist, regularly biking the 55km from Tukkies to his mother on their small farm.

August 25, 1932 – June 30, 2025

It is with a mix of profound sadness and appreciative celebration that we announce the passing of Johannes Hendricus Scheepers on June 30 at Mediclinic Potchefstroom Hospital, with his beloved wife of 67 years, Marie, holding his hand. He is survived by Marie, his children Johannes, Louis, and Marius, and extended family Jacqueline, Sandra, Alan, Rachelle, Frances, Tristan, Sebastian, Yvonne, Vernon, Morné, and Jaco.

Born in Benoni as the only child of Johannes and Mattie, Johann completed his dentistry degree at the University of Pretoria in September 1954, earning the affectionate nickname Karools. He was the last surviving member of his graduating class of 24.

His professional journey began in January 1955, when he locumed for Dr. Andrew Kuhn in the Stiemen’s Building on Church Street, Potchefstroom. It was there that he first met Marie. After a few too many visits for a “simple filling,” the two fell in love and were married on January 18, 1958. Johann later purchased the practice, and then the building itself, in partnership with Jacob Singer and Philip Miller. Remarkably, he spent his entire professional career in that same practice, working well into his 90s and continuing until shortly before his passing.

In his youth, Johann was an avid cyclist, regularly biking the 55km from Tukkies to his mother on their small farm, Tweefontein, just outside Bronkhorstspruit — often balancing his suitcase on the handlebars as he navigated the country roads. Later, in Potchefstroom, he traded his bike for golf clubs and became a fixture at the Potchefstroom Country Club, playing every Wednesday and Saturday (and any other opportunity). He achieved a low handicap of 5, captained the club in 1975 and 1976, and was selected for the Western Transvaal Men’s Veteran Team during those years.

A committed member of the Rotary Club (District 9320) since 1961, Johann was proud to achieve 100% attendance for 44 consecutive years. Above all, Johann was a family man — his happiest and most content moments were always in the company of his loved ones. Whether at Christmas, on a cruise, or vacationing in Hermanus or Maui, he lit up every room with his dry, mischievous humor and the excited glint in his eyes. In those moments, Johann didn’t have a care in the world, just as now, he rests securely in God’s embrace, celebrating a life well lived.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 28 at 11:00 at the NG Kerk on 21 Dwars Street, Potchefstroom. Instead of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a cause close to your heart.
