PAWS Haven without wheels after bakkie breaks down
“As an animal shelter, our hearts are always ready to help, but right now, our hands are tied. This is not from a lack of care, but from a lack of transport."
PAWS Haven, the local animal shelter known for rescuing injured and abandoned pets, is facing a crisis after its bakkie, vital for transporting animals in need, broke down completely.
The vehicle, which is used for urgent call-outs and the transport of animals to safety, is currently out of service. This has left shelter staff unable to respond to emergencies, placing vulnerable animals at risk.
Last week, the Herald ran a story appealing to the community for assistance, either in the form of repairs, donations, or a replacement vehicle. Unfortunately, no contributions were received.
“Today is one of those heartbreaking days for us,” said Annelize van der Westhuizen, spokesperson for PAWS Haven. “As an animal shelter, our hearts are always ready to help, but right now, our hands are tied. It hurts deeply to say no when we know animals may be waiting, scared, or in pain. This is not from a lack of care, but from a lack of transport.”
The shelter urges the public to help in any way possible. Contributions toward repairs or a new bakkie would allow PAWS Haven to continue its vital work of rescuing animals in urgent need.
The shelter has promised to provide updates as soon as the vehicle is back on the road. Meanwhile, they are asking for understanding and patience from the community during this difficult time.
For those who wish to help, PAWS Haven can be contacted directly at 063 181 3524. Every donation could make the difference between life and death for an animal in need.
