A three-year-old girl became another victim of a sexual offence when her little friend’s father allegedly molested her last Wednesday.
According to Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Const. Kelebogile Trom, the incident occurred at the hostel in Mogotsi Street at about 11:30. The child was playing at the neighbour’s house when another neighbour called her grandmother to come help her fix the door.
“She went with the neighbour and later when she went back home, she found her granddaughter standing in the doorway with her underwear on her knees. The little girl said her private parts were sore and told her grandmother that her friend’s father had smeared Vaseline (petroleum jelly) on her private parts and had penetrated her with his finger,” Trom reported.
The child was taken to a private doctor before being referred to the hospital. The matter was later reported to the police.
According to the latest crime statistics released last Friday, the Ikageng police station recorded 135 sexual offences between April last year and March this year. This is in comparison to the 165 sexual offences reported at the station between April 2014 and March 2015.
Although rape and sexual offences have decreased by 26 cases, there is still a need for serious intervention to fight the crime.
