An unstoppable fire ravaged three shacks in a yard in Ext. 3 Baipei in Promosa on Sunday morning, leaving six people homeless.
The tearful 43-year-old, Bongiwe Shozi says her family lost everything and is pleading to the community to come to their rescue with anything. Her family has lost all their clothes, blankets, bed, fridge, washing machine and other electric appliances.
She says it’s still a mystery how the fire started because all she had was a pot of water on top of a coal stove. ‘I quickly went out to collect money from one of my customers for beauty products. I wasn’t even gone for three minutes when the neighbour called to say that my two-room shack was on fire. I rushed back and found my neighbours helping to douse the fire. The fire brigade also came to the scene but it took two hours to extinguish the stubborn fire,’ she said. ‘I watched helplessly as all my belongings went up in flames.’
She is currently staying with her daughter and her husband is staying with friends.
She says all the shacks in the yard were burnt to the ground. In addition to hers, there are also two one-room shacks belonging to a couple and a young man. ‘The fire almost spread to the landlord’s RDP house,” she said.
