‘Sgt Koena is not an indigent’ – NW 405

The chief communications officer of NW 405, Jeanette Tshite says the disaster management official responded to all the houses affected by the windstorm in Ikageng and Promosa on 16 October.

The chief communications officer of NW 405, Jeanette Tshite says the disaster management official responded to all the houses affected by the windstorm in Ikageng and Promosa on 16 October.
She says Moses Moletsane Koena was among those who got a response from the centre and, therefore, denies that no one from the municipality attended to him or visited the family.
‘On arrival for assessment at Koena’s home, he already had a tent to cover the roof temporarily. The disaster management official then advised him to continue using his tent in the interim while finding other means to fix the roof of his house. Tshite says Koena is a permanent employee of the SAPS and, therefore, is not an indigent.
She highlighted that natural phenomena such as a windstorm cannot be prevented but if the house is built to the required standards, the risk could be minimised. ‘Even though the wind was strong, poor workmanship exacerbated the situation,’ she said.
Tshite added that the disaster management official informed him that she would finalise the report of all houses affected by the windstorm and provide feedback.
‘While looking at how the disaster management centre could intervene during situations like these, homeowners are urged to make a point of ensuring their property in order to be safe,’ she advised
