A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Potchefstroom police station after a cyclist, 37-year-old Lawrence Mokae, was fatally hit by a car in Ikageng at about 05:20 last Monday morning.

According to Capt. Mvula Chaka, Potchefstroom SAPS spokesperson, the victim suffered multiple injuries to the body and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chaka says the driver of the Nissan Micra, a 36-year-old woman alleges ‘that she was driving on the road to Ikageng near Ikageng Memorial Park when she noticed a man pushing his bicycle on the other side of the road. From a distance, the robot signalled right of way for cars.
The man unexpectedly appeared in front of the car, and that is when she hit him. She then stopped the car, got out and called the emergency services,’ he said.
Chaka says no one has been arrested at this stage and the police are still conducting investigations. He advises pedestrians to double-check when crossing the road and cautioned cyclists to always obey the road rules and take necessary safety precautions. He advises them not to wear dark clothes at night and rather wear reflectors to be visible to drivers in poor lighting conditions. He also cautioned the drivers to be extra careful, practise safety precautions and be on the lookout for pedestrians.
‘There has been a high incidence of culpable homicides, especially on the N12 and the Carletonville road near Boskop garage. Every three months, there are accidents involving pedestrians,’ he said.
