The recent killings and abduction of women in South Africa have sparked a wave of reports on social media of children missing and abducted in Ikageng and other areas.
The Ikageng police have condemned these reports that have caused mayhem within the community.
According to Const. Kelebogile Trom, Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, ‘no cases of abduction or killing of children have been reported at the police station.
‘However, cases of two missing girls, aged 14 and 15 years of age respectively, were opened at the station. They were last seen on 20 May, when the told their parents they were going to watch the Classic Clash. The parents opened the cases on 29 May and the girls were found in Klerksdorp on 31 May,’ says Trom.
‘We would also like to condemn the rumour that is circulating on social media about a silver Polo with a Gauteng registration number that is abducting children at schools and that a small child was killed near a church on Tuesday,’ said Trom. As a result of this fake news, some community members tried to assault two motorists who were driving silver Polos in Ext. 11 and Ext. 7. ‘If people see suspicious vehicles, they should rather get the registration numbers and inform the police,’ she said.
In the wake of these false reports, Trom says parents should teach their children not to talk to strangers or give directions to unknown motorists
