The Cinderella of the expanded JB Marks Local Municipality continues to suffer the indignity of unserviced bucket toilets.
According to Thembisile Tekani, the community leader of Marikana-Promosa informal settlement, it has been two weeks since the exasperated community members dumped their maggot-infested toilets next to the road in disgust.
‘The service provider claims that the JB Marks Municipality refuses to pay them,’ he said.
Diarrhoea and migraines are commonplace here, caused by the combination of the unsanitary conditions and the constant stench that hangs thick in the air. The Herald has written numerous reports on the human rights violations that beset the Marikana residents yet the situation remains unresolved. For these people, the hopes of a better life for all remain a pipe dream.
The municipal spokesperson had not responded to the Herald’s queries by the time of going to print.
