Angered members of the Ikageng-based Peri Peri volunteer community protection group were up in arms this morning in front of the Potchefstroom Magistrates Court after their chairperson, Lucky Lerefolo, and another member, Dele Shoai, was arrested yesterday (Sunday, 23 December) during a community patrol session.
Ikageng SAPS arrested Lerefolo and Shoai for an alleged robbery during one of their patrol sessions on Sunday morning. The two accused members appeared in court this morning.
According to the Peri Peri treasurer, Diana Plaatjie, the group is furious that members were arrested without viable means in her opinion.
“We are honest and we as Peri Peri try our best to make the community safe against crime and gangsterism in Ext.11 (Ikageng). We feel that there is a lot of injustice involved. Our members get arrested and have to sit in court, whilst there are still criminals roaming around the streets,” she said.
Lerefolo and Shoai were released on bail today and will reappear in court on 25 January 2019.
