A group of caring mamas extended a hand of generosity by giving essential goodies to children in need in Ikageng, Promosa and the surrounding areas.
Caring Mamas is a group of mothers who have come together to help underprivileged people, particularly children.
The concept was birthed by Kelebogile Trom, a police communication officer, after seeing a teen dressed in worn-out clothes. “She was shy. She could not speak up and was not confident about herself,” she said. Kelebogile realised the need to do something about it.
So, she shared her experience with some of her friends and they decided to start Caring Mamas. They wanted to help where they could as they noticed several children in their communities who were in need and whose parents were unemployed.
The Caring Mamas’ first initiative started on Sunday, 31 May when they handed out packs of essential toiletries to teenagers.
The women identified the children in different communities of Potchefstroom and donated 20 packs of goodies.
They also donated maize meal and vegetables to a family, after seeing the mother picking spinach next to the road to feed her family.
Portia Igbal, the SAPS Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, also donated bath towels.
The group of 17 women has formed sub-groups. The members don’t contribute money, but each member contributes essential goodies like toothpaste, bath soap and body lotion, sanitary towels, roll-on and more.

“We plan to make a change in our community by assisting those who are in need. We want to lift their morale, give them hope and make sure they feel good, no matter what their circumstances,” said Kelebogile.
The Caring Mamas’ next initiative will be in Khuma, as one of the Mamas is from there.
The Mamas plan to have another initiative for Mandela Day, so, if you would like to donate toiletries or join the Caring Mamas, contact Kelebogile at 082 543 3930 or Ketlareng Polori at 082 043 4898.
