A North-West University (NWU) student is investigating whether agriculture is a possible employment option for unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35 in small communities.

Elise Oosthuizen began the data collection process with the support of NWU Business School. She gathered information from unemployed youth volunteers at the Promosa Secondary School on Saturday. The participants filled out a survey, which will remain confidential.

Prof Jan van Romburgh, the director of NWU Business School, says the outcomes of the research would indicate what could be done to help the youth.

The objective of the research study was to improve the probability of securing employment for job-seeking youth within the province.

Oosthuizen thanks her supervisor, Prof Ronnie Lotriet the school’s principal, Veyonny Ferris; Prof Van Romburgh; Glenville Boeda Fransman and all the volunteers and sponsors who made the event a success.

Oosthuizen will continue gathering information from institutions specialising in agriculture.
